Through an underground adoption network, Orozco, an 18-year-old single mother, had given her newborn to strangers who promised to pay her about $1,350. But she changed her mind and was desperately searching for the boy.
''I regret even considering giving him away,'' a distraught Orozco said.
On another day the same week, Kim Reyes of New Jersey eagerly searched for her daughter-to-be at Hogar Nuevo Amanecer, a private orphanage in Guatemala that temporarily houses children who are up for adoption.
Reyes instantly recognized doll-faced, 2-year-old Jacqueline from photos the orphanage had sent.
''Hi, baby,'' Reyes whispered, clapping softly to get the child's attention. ``You wanna come? Come, Jacqueline, come.''
The two scenes illustrate opposite ends of a complex battle over adoptions in the Central American nation, the hemisphere's largest source of children for U.S. parents and -- the U.S. government contends -- a virtually unregulated baby-selling market.
INTERNATIONAL PACT
The United States has threatened to halt the flow of U.S.-bound children unless Guatemala complies with regulations outlined in an international pact, The Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoptions, that sets strict rules and requirements, such as requiring judicial oversight and searches for relatives who could care for the children, and allowing birth mothers time to change their minds.
President Bush raised the issue in Guatemala last month on his Latin America tour, and the United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, also is pressing the Guatemalan government.
''This is the country that has the least restrictions on adoptions of any other in the hemisphere,'' said Manuel Manrique, the UNICEF representative in Guatemala.
About 4,700 Guatemalans, mostly babies 1 year old or younger, were adopted by U.S. families last year -- compared to about 3,800 in 2005.
MANY COMPLAINTS
Critics say the process is fraught with anomalies. Among them: some cases of birth mothers being pressured to give up their babies for cash; growing numbers of falsified birth certificates; reports of outright baby thefts; and even deaths from lack of care while children were in private orphanages awaiting adoption.
Opponents also complain that there is little judicial oversight and that lawyers known as ''notaries,'' acting as baby brokers, charge up to $30,000 per child.
''Right now, the whole process is done by notaries,'' Manrique said. ``They say the children are treated well and taken care of, but nobody really knows. . . . Everything is based on paperwork.''
Manrique and activists blame the system for experiences like Orozco's. A teenage mother involved with a married man who left her broke and without family support, Orozco went to a woman known for arranging adoptions.
''I went to her house to talk to her about the adoption because I didn't think I could take care of my baby,'' Orozco told The Miami Herald, adding that she was promised 10,000 quetzals -- about $1,350.
A week after the boy was born, Orozco was instructed to deliver him to another woman, who quickly disappeared with the child. But Orozco changed her mind and went to authorities, triggering a search for the baby.
''I don't want problems, I just want my baby back,'' Orozco said.
Birth mothers changing their minds is a reason some U.S. families seek adoptions overseas, where the process is faster. In Guatemala, most adoptions take no more than eight months. Single people and couples of any age can adopt.
''I'm sure bad things happen, just like anything. But most people do it right,'' said Sara Eide, 33, of Iowa, who has adopted three Guatemalan children. ``I just hope that if they make changes, there will still be the ability for families to adopt and these children to find homes.''
The potential halt in adoptions is worrisome for Reyes, 44, a real estate agent, and her husband Ron, also 44, who designs computer boards and prepares mortgages in Freehold, N.J.
''If they stopped it, I don't know what we'd do,'' Reyes said after meeting her prospective adoptive daughter Jacqueline. ``It would be devastating.''
Josefina Arellano, a prosecutor for Guatemala's attorney general's office, said officials do not want to stop adoptions but do support sweeping revisions.
''What we want is for adoptions to be clean, with good practices and more controls,'' Arellano said. ``What we are seeing is that children are being born just for adoption.''
Birth mothers receive between $680 and $1,360 per child, but there have been cases where the price has gone up to $9,500 -- a small fortune for many in a nation with a per capita income of about $2,400.
`MANY REQUIREMENTS'
Feliciano Carrillo Gudiel, an attorney who runs a private orphanage, defended the system and said adoptions are well regulated.
''We already have to fulfill many requirements,'' Carrillo said.
His orphanage, Hogar Nuevo Amanecer, serves as a temporary home for about 30 children at a time, mostly babies and toddlers.
Bugs Bunny, Piglet and other cartoon characters adorn the walls of the two-story facility in a middle-class neighborhood. Nannies tend to the youngest, while older kids learn English phrases such as ''I love you'' to prepare for their new U.S. families.
''Children need family, and the younger the better for the family and child,'' Carrillo said. ``Our objective is to find homes as quickly as possible . . . and to make room for more children.''
Changes in the system would be welcomed, Carrillo said, but not The Hague Convention. Guatemala is among 75 countries that have signed the pact, but in 2003, its application was declared invalid by the country's Constitutional Court.
''The Hague was created by developed countries,'' Carrillo said. ``It does not take our needs into account.''
THE ONLY SOLUTION
In a nation of 12.3 million where the richest 20 percent makes two-thirds of all income, Carrillo said ''adoption is the solution'' for mothers who can't afford a child.
They include María Elena Hernández Lem, 24, who showed up one evening at Carrillo's orphanage to drop off two of her children: 7-month-old María Lorena and her 7-year-old brother Gaspar.
The indigenous woman, who is HIV-positive, said she decided to give them up because the little money she earns peddling produce is spent on medication for herself and the youngest child, also HIV-positive.
''The decision to put them up for adoption is mine,'' Hernández Lem said. ``I am responsible for where they will end up the day something happens to me.''
Carrillo said she would receive 5,000 quetzals -- about $680 -- per child.
SURROUNDED BY LOVE
On the day Orozco, the 18-year-old mom, searched for her son at the hospital, she found him surrounded by nurses in an examination room.
The baby was abandoned by his keepers at a firehouse the previous night, apparently after they learned of authorities' involvement.
Orozco bit her nails and wrung her hands as tears she had held back for three days began to flow.
''He is so beautiful,'' Orozco said after receiving the child. She held the baby close to her face, rubbed her cheek against his and covered him with kisses.
At Hogar Nuevo Amanecer, the Reyeses cried, too, when they said goodbye to the 2-year-old girl they now called Maddisun. They would have to wait at least another month before they could take her to New Jersey.
''If she's not adopted, what future would she have here?'' Reyes said between heavy sobs. Then she pulled Maddisun close, hugged her tightly and covered her face with kisses.
``You're something, little girl.''
Dos presos por crímenes en serie

Un sacerdote, un masajista, un extranjero y dos jóvenes de posición social alta de Quito, son cinco de las víctimas de un asesino en serie que odia a los homosexuales, informó ayer la Policía de Pichincha.
El primer crimen fue hace tres meses cuando un religioso apareció estrangulado en su departamento.
Las familias de las cinco personas asesinadas decidieron no hacer públicos los crímenes, lo que -según la Policía-, contribuyó a las investigaciones.
Los primeros resultados se obtuvieron con la captura de un sospechoso en Quito y otro en Guayaquil, en donde también se ha conocido de dos casos similares, dijo la Policía.
Francisco Guayasamín, miembro de la comunidad gay ecuatoriana, dijo que las muertes suman diez y no cinco como hasta el momento informó la Policía, y que ocurrieron en Quito, Guayaquil y Cuenca. "El presunto asesino es alto, ojos azules, cabello corto y rubio, de 22 años, y no frecuenta bares para gays", agregó.
DENUNCIA POR DOBLE DISCRIMINACION A FRANCISCO GUAYASAMIN
De mi consideración,
Mi nombre es Francisco Guayasamin, desde hace varios años llevo a cabo actividades en defensa de los derechos de los GLBT ( Gay, Lesbianas, Bisexuales y Transgéneros) manteniendo bajo mi propio peculio PAIS CANELA www.geocities.com/paiscanela y también REENCUENTRO www.reencuentro.se un grupo dedicado a la ayuda a personas que han sido adoptadas ilegalmente en Ecuador como fue mi caso.
A la edad de 5 años fui raptado por Alfredo Guayasamin y su esposa Gulnara Oliva de la Casa de Transito en San Rafael que en ese entonces estaba regentado por las Madres del Buen Pastor. Mi madre jamás dio la autorización para que me adopten, ni tampoco la directora del Hogar, Madre Magdalena Rueda.
Madre Raquel Villaquiran dió la autirización a cambio de un pago dado por Alfredo Guayasamin, que según mis investigaciones, poco antes de mi adopción, como trabajador del Banco la Previsora, fingió un robo de 10.000 sucres en el año de 1970 como parte de pago por mi rapto, mientras las religiosas engañaron a mi madre que yo había sido llevado al extranjero y no daban con mi paradero.
Luego de vivir bajo engaños con esta familia. Experimentar lo que es tener un padre alcohólico y una madre que todo el tiempo me estaba recalcando que soy recogido y que ellos me hacían un gran favor. Alfredo Guayasamin se enferma y ante la eminente venida de su muerte. Ellos recién empiezan a tramitar los documentos legales para reconocerme como hijo propio, sin haber hecho antes los documentos legales de mi adopción. Alfredo Guayasamin murió cuando yo tenía 11 años, luego de dos meses de haberme reconocido como su hijo propio.
A los 23 años Gulnara Oliva, me expulsa de la casa aduciendo que soy hijo adoptivo y que no tengo ningún derecho a permanecer allí por el hecho de que soy homosexual.
Luego de investigarla, descubrí que ella me falsificó mi firma y tomo mis herencias, dejándome prácticamente en la calle. Esperando el tiempo suficiente para que toda acción legal sobre falsificación de firmas prescriba.
Al poco tiempo, la madre de Alfredo Guayasamin, me ayudó proporcionándome vivienda y alimentación en su casa por un año. Ella murió y los herederos me pidieron que intervenga como intermediario en la venta de la casa, en la cual Inés Guayasamin se comprometió a pagarme parte de la comisión por la intermediación, pero jamás cumplió
Luego Madre Rosalía Guayasamin, nos regaló un terreno a mi y otro a Mariana Guayasamin en el Valle de los Chillos con el dinero que ella recibió por la venta de la casa.
En marzo del 2003 aparecí en la revista VISTAZO en un artículo que daba la cara como gay. Al mes siguiente Mariana Guayasamin viene a exigirme con amenazas que le ceda el terreno. Siendo la misma religiosa que me pide que le devuelva el terreno, sacándome cuentas de todo lo que me ha dado y aduciendo que es dinero de la Comunidad de Las Madres Franciscanas y que ella tiene que devolverlo.
El año pasado voy a ver el terreno que legalmente me pertenece y me encuentro que Mariana Guayasamin ha construido una casa sobre el terreno de mi propiedad. Al reclamarle, me ha dado explicaciones irrelevantes del caso. Pero la causa principal de que me quiten el terreno, me la dió Inés Guayasamin, su tía. – Estamos en todo el derecho de quitarte el terreno porque te hemos dado educación, alimentación, te hemos asistido y tú no eres nada para nosotros, sobre todo porque nos engañaste aparentando ser una buena persona. Como ahora ya sabemos lo que tú realmente eres (homosexual ), tú no tienes ningún derecho a reclamar y ten en cuenta que debido a lo que haces, debes de recordar que existe un Dios en el Cielo y que este no tardarà en castigarte.
Después de haberles enviado una carta recalcándoles todos los procesos ilegales que han cometido en mi contra debido a que con palabras, creo que fingen no entender. Inés Guayasamin responde – Lo que escribes es tan solo un pasquín.- Y me recalca que tengo que darles gracias a ellos por el hecho de que llevo el apellido “Guayasamin”. Aclarando que a ellos ni siquiera los mismos parientes directos de Oswaldo Guayasamin los reconocen, y que a mí nadie me ha dado nada por el hecho de ser “Guayasamin”, ni ellos tampoco la educación.
Actualmente parientes directos de Oswaldo Guayasamin me ayudan gratuitamente en programas de apoyo a Personas viviendo con VIH/Sida y apoyo sicológico a GLBT y no me están sacando en cara este hecho.
Pido muy comedidamente, que este hecho se haga público. Realmente no estoy interesado en el terreno, sino en el hecho de que ellos varias veces han obrado ilegalmente conmigo. Al igual que muchos en este país hablan sobre las leyes de Dios, pero no cumplen las leyes que nos regentan.
En este caso he sido discriminado doblemente por el hecho de no llevar su sangre ( que no me interesa ) y también por el hecho de ser gay, que para ellos significa ser “mala persona”.
Pido de favor que me ayuden a difundir esta denuncia, debido a que esta será la única manera de hacer entender a estos ciudadanos típicamente ecuatorianos, cúal es la diferencia entre lo LEGAL y lo ILEGAL.
Esta denuncia no lo hago por el terreno, sino por el derecho a que todos los seres humanos tenemos a que se respete nuestra dignidad.
Estoy seguro que incluso este antecedente servirá para que otras personas que piensan hacer lo mismo, no se atrevan y personas adoptivas o GLBT que estén pasando por la misma circunstancia, que los hay , tengan la seguridad para poder reclamar.

Presente tiene como objetivo darla ha conocer mi más profundo rechazo contra las agresiones de que viene siendo objeto el compañero Francisco Guayasamín las que han derivado hasta el despojo de su patrimonio personal, según la denuncia del compañero Francisco Guayasamín todo se debe a que él es un ciudadano gay.
El discriminar a un ciudadan@ por orientación sexual constituye una clara violación de los derechos fundamentales, le recuerdo que en la Constitución de la República del Ecuador en el Art. 23 .numeral 3 dice explícitamente la no discriminación por (orientación sexual) .
Sra. Mariana Guayasamín, le recuerdo que Francisco Guayasamín es un ciudadano gay que honra a nuestra comunidad ya es uno de los pocos que da la cara ante esta sociedad intolerante y gracias a sus constanantes denuncias se conoce de los atropellos de que somos victimas hasta de nuestras propias familias que no ven más allá de sus narices que creen que por ser homosexuales no tenemos derechos y que por nuestra orientación vamos ha ser castigados por Díos.
Sra. Mariana Guayasamín Jativa, como usted pregona que hay un Díos que todo lo castiga entonces pregúntese que cuando le va a llegar su castigo y también a quienes fueron sus cómplices de todos los actos de mala fe cometidos por usted y compañía en contra de Francisco Guasamin.
La compañero Francisco le recordamos que no esta solo en esta lucha contra la discriminació, homofobia, intolerancia y por tal razón estaremos atentos de loa acontecimientos y vamos a exigir a la autoridad competen un investigación a fondo de lo denunciado y se sancione a resultaren autores, cómplices e encubridores y que jamás se repitan iguales sucesos que violan los derechos fundamentales de todas y todos.
